The majority of Australians gamble responsibly but research suggests that about one per cent of the population has a gambling problem. Problem gambling is characterised by difficulties in limiting money and/or time spent on gambling, which leads to adverse consequences for the gambler, their family or friends and for the community.

The ACT Gambling Counselling and Support Service is a free, anonymous and confidential service to individuals and their families and friends struggling with gambling issues. The service is provided by Relationships Australia Canberra & Region in partnership with Care Financial Counselling and offers support for individuals affected by problem gambling in the ACT region. Having a family member or friend struggling with problem gambling can be a very stressful experience. You care about this person and you want to help them. You may be suffering from the negative consequences of problem gambling such as family turmoil or physical and emotional stress.
The ACT Gambling Counselling and Support Service can help you work through your concerns. Program counsellors can also connect you to other services in your community, such as obtaining financial or legal adivice.

Gambling counselling myths and facts
It will cost money to see a counsellor:
Gambling counselling support services are offered free of charge.
Only gambling can get help from the service:
Anyone affect by a friend or family member’s gambling can use this service.
You have to want to stop gambling to sue this service:
There’s no requirement to stop gambling before, during or after using this service.
Help is only offered in English:
Services are offered in any language, free interpreting services will be arranged where required.
Only people who have self excluded from a gambling venue can get free services:
Services are available for ANYONE who is concerned about their own or affected by a family members gambling.
If I see a gambling or financial counsellor everyone will know about it:
All gambling counselling support services are confidential.
I can’t get help because I work full-time:
Services are flexible, we can arrange late appointments. Help is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, even online and via the telephone.
If I see a counsellor I’m going to have to talk about other things I don’t want to talk about:
Counselling through this program is gambling focused. You and your counsellor will determine what your goals are, what you want to talk about, and what you hope to gain from accessing services. You and your counsellor will decide together what will or won’t be addressed in the counselling.
Only really ill or trouble people need counselling:
Most who attend counselling are regular people who happen to struggle with their own or a family member’s gambling.
Care was recently successful in a partnership tender application with Relationships Australia to operate the ACT Gambling Counselling and Support Service (AGCSS). Relationships Australia is the lead agency with Care being subcontracted to provide the financial counselling. More information . . .
